Seeking Applicants for ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Corps, Deadline is Feb. 26
OMAHA, Neb., Jan 28, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Feeding America(R) is currently accepting applications for members of the new ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Corps; those who are passionate about ending child hunger and making a real difference in the lives of children in local communities are encouraged to apply. The ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Corps was established thanks to a grant from the ConAgra Foods Foundation.

ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Corps members will be charged with providing on-the-ground support for community-based efforts to help end child hunger while working in food banks affiliated with Feeding America, the nation's leading hunger-relief organization. These efforts will include putting in place plans to solve immediate needs and finding long-term solutions that will address the underlying problems that lead to childhood hunger. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 16.7 million children in America - or nearly 1 in 4 children - don't have enough food to live active, healthful lives.

"The ConAgra Foods Foundation is building a community of people passionate about ensuring children have access to the food and knowledge they need to eat nutritiously, live balanced lifestyles, and succeed in school and life," said Chris Kircher, president, ConAgra Foods Foundation. "In partnering with Feeding America, we're looking for ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Corps members who share that passion and are committed to creating real, sustainable solutions to end child hunger."

ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Corps members will build and support community programs and partnerships to help fight child hunger, while working with Corps members in other cities to create comprehensive programs that make a real difference in the lives of hungry children and their families. Each Corps member will be selected by Feeding America and serve a two-year placement at a local food bank.

In 2010, the first six members of the Child Hunger Corps members will be based at Feeding America-affiliated food banks in Little Rock, Ark.; Ft. Myers, Fla.; Houston; Grove City, Ohio; Portland, Ore.; and Salem, Va. Over the next five years, the ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Corps will expand to a total of 35 members in 35 cities across the United States. Applications are available on the Feeding America Web site and must be submitted by Feb. 26, 2010.

"We are so grateful to the ConAgra Foods Foundation for its leadership in the Child Hunger Corps," said Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of Feeding America. "This opportunity provides support and dedication in the fight against child hunger at the ground level in our communities, impacting children around the country in providing the nutrition needed to grow, survive and thrive."

The ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Corps was established as part of a $10 million grant from the ConAgra Foods Foundation to Feeding America. The grant also supports other new Feeding America child hunger initiatives, including the Summer Feeding Program and the ConAgra Foods Fund to Fight Child Hunger.

ConAgra Foods' relationship with Feeding America is the largest corporate initiative among Feeding America donors dedicated solely to fighting child hunger. Since 1993, the ConAgra Foods Foundation, ConAgra Foods and its brands have contributed nearly $35 million dollars and more than 230 million pounds of food to support Feeding America programs.

About the ConAgra Foods Child Hunger Corps Member Position
The position is a volunteer stipend position administered by Feeding America. Each corps member will receive a living allowance and benefits from Feeding America. Corps members will be responsible for developing a food bank's capacity and capability to execute program models targeted toward the alleviation of child hunger, with the objective of increasing access to nutritious food in times when children need it most: in the summer, afterschool, on weekends and school vacations, and at home. Corps members will serve a two-year placement at a local food bank. Applications are due Feb. 26, 2010. Start date will be August 2010.
